About the song

“Wasted Days and Wasted Nights” stands as a quintessential piece in American music history, encapsulating the soulful blend of country and pop genres that defined Freddy Fender’s career. Originally penned and recorded in 1959 during Fender’s early years, the song emerged amidst his journey to meld rockabilly with Tejano influences, showcasing a burgeoning new style that would come to define his sound.

However, Fender’s ascent was not without its challenges. A setback arose in the form of legal troubles when he faced charges for marijuana possession, resulting in a conviction in May 1960. Despite this hurdle, Fender’s determination and musical prowess persisted, eventually leading to the recording of a Spanish-language rendition titled “Noches y días perdidos.”

The song’s resurgence came in August 1971 when the Sir Douglas Quintet, a Texas-based band known for their hit “She’s About a Mover,” released their own rendition of “Wasted Days and Wasted Nights.” It wasn’t until 1975, under the guidance of record producer Huey P. Meaux, that Fender revisited the song. Recorded at Ben Jack’s Recording Studio in Ft. Smith, Arkansas, with session players like Bruce Ewen, Bill Hamm, David Hungate, and Bob Ketchum, the reimagined version soared to new heights. It topped the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart in August 1975, securing its place as a major pop and country hit.

The song’s success extended beyond American borders, making waves in New Zealand where it reigned at the top of the charts for an impressive 12 weeks. Its popularity transcended decades, prompting Fender to re-record it multiple times, including versions with added synthesizers in the 1980s and a rendition with the Texas Tornados in the early 1990s.

Beyond its chart-topping accolades, “Wasted Days and Wasted Nights” found its way into popular culture, featuring prominently in films like Oliver Stone’s biopic “W” and the alien abduction thriller “Fire in the Sky.” Its enduring appeal and cultural resonance were further recognized when it was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2012, cementing its legacy as a timeless classic.

In essence, “Wasted Days and Wasted Nights” not only reflects the evolution of Freddy Fender’s musical journey but also serves as a poignant reminder of the enduring power of music to transcend borders and generations, resonating deeply with audiences far and wide.

Lyrics

Wasted days and wasted nights
I have left for you behind
For you don’t belong to me
Your heart belongs to someone else
Why should I keep loving you
When I know that you’re not true?
And why should I call your name
When you’re to blame
For making me blue?
Don’t you remember the day
That you went away and left me?
I was so lonely
Prayed for you only
My love
Why should I keep loving you
When I know that you’re not true?
And why should I call your name
When you’re to blame
For making me blue?
Don’t you remember the day
That you went away and left me?
I was so lonely
Prayed for you only
My love
Wasted days and wasted nights
I have left for you behind
For you don’t belong to me
Your heart belongs to someone else
Why should I keep loving you
When I know that you’re not true?
And why should I call your name
When you’re to blame
For making me blue?
