A few years later, Mathis decided to include “Misty” on his 1959 album, Heavenly. However, during the recording session, the producer insisted on Mathis recording a show tune instead. Unexpectedly, Erroll Garner or his manager, Martha Glaser, appeared at the studio. Mathis, determined to fulfill his promise to Garner, insisted on recording “Misty” with the unexpected guest present.

Glenn Osser, a talented arranger, quickly put together the music for Mathis’ version. Andy Ackers, a skilled pianist, accompanied Mathis on the recording. Mathis revealed a unique technique he used for the high-pitched note at the beginning of the song, standing a distance from the microphone and gradually walking closer to create a fading-in effect.

“Misty” became the song that Mathis was most proud of, as he had complete creative control over the recording. It marked a departure from his previous work, which was often influenced by the producer Mitch Miller.

The song was initially released as a back-to-back single with Garner’s instrumental version. However, due to overwhelming demand, Mathis’ recording was released as a commercial single in September 1959. It quickly climbed the charts, reaching No. 12 on Billboard Hot 100. While it may not have been Mathis’ highest-charting song, “Misty” became his signature tune, representing his artistry and versatility.

Mathis’ performance of “Misty” earned him a Grammy nomination for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance. Both Mathis’ and Garner’s recordings have been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, a testament to their enduring legacy.
