About the song

“I Think I Love You” is not just a song; it’s a pop culture phenomenon. Written by Tony Romeo, the track holds a unique place in music history as the debut single for a fictional band – The Partridge Family. Released in August 1970, it predated the premiere of the hit ABC sitcom of the same name by a month. This cleverly orchestrated strategy aimed to leverage the song’s success to generate anticipation for the show.

The song itself rocketed to the top of the charts, reigning supreme on Billboard’s Hot 100 for three weeks in late 1970. Not only did it dominate the American market, but it also achieved international success, reaching number one in Canada and Australia. This widespread popularity cemented its status as the best-selling single of 1970, as certified by the National Association of Recording Merchandisers (NARM).

While “I Think I Love You” was credited to The Partridge Family, the actual vocals belonged to David Cassidy, the show’s heartthrob. Shirley Jones, who played his mother on screen, also appeared on the record. However, for both the single and the show itself, Cassidy lip-synched his performances.

The song’s production boasts an impressive pedigree. Wes Farrell, a seasoned producer, helmed the project, and the backing band featured a who’s who of Los Angeles’ legendary session musicians, collectively known as “The Wrecking Crew.” These heavyweights included guitarists Dennis Budimir and Louie Shelton, bassist Joe Osborn, keyboardist Larry Knechtel, and drummer Hal Blaine, just to name a few. Adding further depth to the sound were backing vocals by members of The Ron Hicklin Singers and The Love Generation.

Critics embraced the song, with Cash Box magazine commending its “attractive sound” and catchy melody, predicting it would win over a wide range of listeners. This proved to be an apt prediction, as “I Think I Love You” transcended generations.

The song’s cultural impact continues to this day. In 2020, DreamWorks Animation prominently featured The Partridge Family’s version in their film “The Croods: A New Age,” showcasing its enduring appeal. Furthermore, a cover by the comedic rock duo Tenacious D played during the film’s credits, demonstrating the song’s ability to adapt to different musical styles.

“I Think I Love You” is more than just a catchy tune; it’s a testament to the power of creative collaboration and strategic marketing. It continues to hold a special place in the hearts of music lovers, serving as a reminder of a bygone era in pop culture.

Lyrics

I was sleeping and right in the middle of a good dream
Like all at once I wake up from something that keeps knocking at my brain
Before I go insane I hold my pillow to my head
And spring up in my bed screaming out the words I dread
I think I love you (I think I love you)
This morning I woke up with this feeling
I didn’t know how to deal with and so I just decided to myself
I’d hide it to myself and never talk about it
And did not go and shout it when you walked into the room
I think I love you (I think I love you)
I think I love you so what am I so afraid of
I’m afraid that I’m not sure of a love there is no cure for
I think I love you isn’t that what life is made of
Though it worries me to say that I never felt this way
I don’t know what I’m up against
I don’t know what it’s all about
I got so much to think about
Hey, I think I love you so what am I so afraid of
I’m afraid that I’m not sure of a love there is no cure for
I think I love you isn’t that what life is made of
Though it worries me to say I never felt this way
Believe me you really don’t have to worry
I only wanna make you happy and if you say “hey go away” I will
But I think better still I’d better stay around and love you
Do you think I have a case let me ask you to your face
Do you think you love me?
I think I love you
I think I love you
I think I love you
I think I love you
I think I love you
I think I love you
I think I love you
I think I love you
