About the song

“The Twist,” a song that became synonymous with dance and social change, was brought to the world by Chubby Checker in 1960. Its infectious rhythm and simple yet captivating dance moves propelled it to unprecedented popularity, making it one of the most iconic songs of the 20th century.

The song’s origins can be traced back to a Baltimore television dance show hosted by DJ Buddy Deane. Deane, recognizing the song’s potential, recommended it to Dick Clark, the host of the national American Bandstand. Clark, intrigued by the song’s appeal, attempted to book Chubby Checker to perform it on his show. However, due to Checker’s unavailability, Clark sought a local artist to record the song. He eventually settled on Checker, whose voice bore a striking resemblance to the original singer.

With its energetic saxophone riffs and driving beat, Checker’s version of “The Twist” quickly captured the hearts of audiences across America. Its exposure on American Bandstand and The Dick Clark Saturday Night Show played a pivotal role in catapulting the song to the top of the charts.

In July 1960, Checker performed “The Twist” for the first time in front of a live audience at the Rainbow Club in Wildwood, New Jersey. Just weeks later, on August 6, 1960, the song became a national sensation after Checker’s electrifying performance on Dick Clark’s American Bandstand.

The twist craze, initially embraced by teenagers, soon caught on among adults as well. Celebrities were spotted doing the dance, adding to the song’s allure. The Peppermint Lounge in New York became the epicenter of the twist phenomenon, with long lines of people eager to participate in the dance craze. This newfound popularity made “The Twist” the first recording to reach number one on the United States charts during two separate chart runs, marking a significant turning point for adult acceptance of rock and roll music.

Checker’s enduring love for “The Twist” led him to re-record the song numerous times throughout his career. He released updated versions in the 1980s and 1990s, including a country rendition and a rap collaboration with The Fat Boys. His commitment to the song helped keep its legacy alive for generations to come.

“The Twist” has left an indelible mark on popular culture. Its simple yet addictive dance moves have been enjoyed by people of all ages and backgrounds. The song’s enduring popularity is a testament to its timeless appeal and Chubby Checker’s iconic status as the “King of Twist.”

Lyrics

Come on, baby
Let’s do the twist
Come on, baby
Let’s do the twist
Take me by my little hand
And go like this
E-yah, twist
Baby, baby, twist
Ooh yeah, just like this
Come on, little miss
And do the twist
My daddy is sleepin’
And mama ain’t around
Yeah, daddy’s just sleepin’
And mama ain’t around
We’re gonna a-twist, a-twist, a-twistin’
‘Til we tear the house down
Come on and twist
Yeah, baby, twist
Ooh yeah, just like this
Come on, little miss
And do the twist
E-yah
Yeah, you should see my little sis
You should see my, my little sis
She really knows how to rock
She knows how to twist
Come on and twist
Yeah, baby, twist
Ooh yeah, just like this
Come on, little miss
And do the twist
Yeah
That’s all right
Yeah, twist all night
Twist
(‘Round and ’round and ’round)
